Greetings! Welcome to Homeschool Seminary. My name is Spencer, and I am the creator, founder, and—if you want to call this a seminary and call me this—the sole employee.
I created this platform because I love seminary. I love learning about God, studying His Word, and sharing my faith with others. Having attended traditional seminary in the past, I know firsthand how valuable it is. However, as I’ve gotten older, my life hasn’t slowed down—a reality you can probably relate to. The rigid demands on my time and schedule became something I simply didn’t want to manage anymore.
I found myself asking, “There has to be another option, right?”
To give you a glimpse of my daily life: I am a husband, a father of four, and a full-time employee at a Christian ministry with regular travel. I teach youth every Wednesday at my church, occasionally host youth group at my home on Fridays, preach every other weekend at a local retirement facility, and still have a dozen other things making demands on my calendar—all before finding time to spend with my wife and kids, eat, and sleep.
I am busy, but my desire to learn and study God’s Word hasn’t disappeared. I just don’t have the room to add traditional academic requirements to an already full schedule.
Yet, I still read a lot. I listen to a lot, watch a lot, and speak about my faith a lot. Shouldn’t that count for something?
We live in the greatest era in human history for self-directed learning. Anything you want to study is only a click away. You can read classics from any time period or language, listen to the greatest teachers and preachers in Church history while driving to the gym, or engage in deep theological discussions right from your phone. The idea that you must attend a traditional institution to grow in your faith simply isn’t true anymore. Traditional seminary is valuable, and if you have the time and resources to go, you should! But for the rest of us, Homeschool Seminary exists to fill the gap.
Another frustration I experienced in traditional education was the lack of freedom in what I got to study. While I appreciate the guidance of wise leaders who came before us, traditional academia relies on a one-size-fits-all approach. Electives are limited, and courses are strictly bound to the instructor’s agenda.
This is where self-directed learning shines: you study what you want to study. You get to go deep where you want to go deep, focusing your energy on the areas of Scripture and theology that matter most to your personal calling.
My wife and I homeschooled our four children (and are still homeschooling our youngest), and what we love most about homeschooling is the freedom—the freedom to build a plan tailored to each individual, adapt to each phase of life, and work when we are best prepared to work. That same principle applies here.
Ready to Begin?
Life moves fast, and your routine will rarely hand you a free block of time to pause everything for a degree. But your desire to know God deeper shouldn’t have to wait for a “someday” that never arrives.
Whether you have twenty minutes in the morning or an hour on the weekend, you can take control of your theological education, study what sparks your spiritual curiosity, and earn recognition for the devotion you put into studying God’s Word.
Life Never Stops, Neither Does Learning.
